The ‘FitzBilly’ trophy is snatched away from us at the last.

Despite a new wave of Covid that hit both teams, The Hall and our sister college at Cambridge, Fitzwilliam,  met at Beaconsfield G.C. on 12th July in the annual contest for the One Size-Fitz-Hall Trophy for the thirteenth time. The teams were reduced to 10-a-side from the normal 14 and the Hall got off to an excellent start- ably led by Jerry Gray and Andrew Beardmore, who overcame the first Fitz pair by 3 & 2 and, when Ian Durrans and David McCammon followed with a convincing victory of 6 and 4, The Hall looked set for their first win for some years.

But, Fitzbilly rallied, forced a half with Clive Penwarden and David West and a narrow win against Sandy McPherson and Mike Simmie. So, it was down to the final match which went all the way to the 18th green where, after a gallant battle, Michael Archer and Peter Jones had to accept defeat by one hole.

The match was therefore halved but, as Fitzbilly are the holders, they retained the trophy and the shocking-pink jacket!’
